Dr. Samuel Thielman has practiced psychiatry in the Asheville area for many years, though he recently returned after a decade and a half of service with the U.S. Department of State and was Director of that Program as well one of the Department’s experts on traumatic stress and resilience. He has broad expertise in the treatment of mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, and problems related to complex work and personal situations. A careful listener, he prefers to begin with a detailed history, and to assess all possible medical and life influences as he develops his treatment plan. Skilled in psychopharmacology, he nonetheless tends to use medication therapy as one of many parts of an overall treatment approach.
Dr. Thielman has particular expertise and interest issues relating to adjustment to high stress situations. He has worked extensively in the U.S. and overseas on issues relating to workplace stress, burnout, vicarious traumatization, and resilience. In addition to being an active clinician, Dr. Thielman has many professional publications and his research, reflections, and reviews have been published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Clinical Psychiatry, Disaster Medicine and Public Health, The Journal of Aggression, Maltreatment and Trauma, and The Foreign Service Journal and a number of other publications. Dr. Thielman received his medical school, psychiatry, and subspecialty fellowship training at Duke University. He is a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and manager of Still Waters Global LLC, an employee assistance organization.

Dr. Richard Smoot is a clinical psychologist, working with the US military for the last 20 years. He has taught psychology at the University of Southern Mississippi, St. Leo University, as well as Wright State University. Dr. Smoot received a Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology) degree at Wright State University in 1991 and a Master's degree in Clinical Psychopharmacology at Nova Southeastern University in 2008. He has a broad range of skills working with adults, children, families and marital issues as well as psychological and school testing. He has particular expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) treatments of depression, anxiety, panic, ADHD, smoking cessation, chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder

Dr. Cruz is a Board Certified psychiatrist practicing in Asheville NC with over thirty years of experience. He uses an eclectic approach to psychiatry and psychotherapy.
